I offer evidence-based virtual behavioral treatment for disruptive picky eating and mild-moderate Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).
Disruptive picky eating and ARFID are both characterized by patterns of eating that cause social, emotional, and/or physical problems in a person’s life, such as weight loss, stressful family meals, or not being able to enjoys social events. Common causes are treatable when properly assessed and diagnosed. Common causes include:
Sensory sensitivities to foods
Fear of negative eating consequences (e.g., choking)
Apparent lack of interest in eating or not having an appetite
What is Picky-Eating/ ARFID Treatment?
While the goals for treatment are different for everyone, behavioral treatment for picky-eating and ARFID may include:
Overcoming anxiety and/or sensory sensitivities related to certain foods
Increasing the number of accepted foods
Improving family relationships/stress during meals times
Reducing the stress of eating in social situations
Increasing weight or improving nutritional gaps
Improving parental distress about feeding
Improving eating confidence
Sometime ARFID requires extensive medical support, but many presentations are appropriate for virtual treatment with an evidence-based provider.
